Christmas specials always feel a little risky; You’re confined by a theme, it’s a hectic time of year and half the time you feel obliged to make one. I wanted to make a sincere thank you.
I started planning this episode in October and I had really big plans this time, like a whole TV Show format. We ordered the Neo Geo X Gold in late October, I’ve had a steady stream of Christmas toys coming in (War Planets, Mighty Max, Skeleton Warriors) and I even started working on a review of the Die Hard Trilogy for the Sega Saturn and the Playstation. A long episode, lots of content, including a new console unboxing and videogame review, and I left myself about a month to finish it. Would have been great but first there was problems actually scripting the episode, then the Neo Geo X Gold was delayed until right after Christmas and finally, I simply wasn’t in the Christmas spirit.
I didn’t change my mind until very recently. A lot of reviewers state they need weeks to prepare an episode, I’m one of those guys. After family commitments and full-time work there’s not a lot of work to write, produce and distribute episodes. This was an exception though, just to prove it to myself, I bought the Pacman console on the 12th, wrote and filmed the Christmas review on the 13th and had it edited and ready by the 16th.
Is this the best episode ever? Nowhere close, but I’m pretty proud of the turn-around time. This isn’t a forced, obligatory Christmas special, this episode is a genuine thank you.
I put extra time in completing the Atari 2600 and Skyhammer reviews instead of pouring effort into making a hokey Christmas special and I think it was worth it. At this time of the year where the internet starts to slow down, for those of you left it’s nice getting some content not strictly tied to Christmas… So Merry Christmas!!
Stay safe and I’ll hopefully be back producing by February.
