Mighty Max Doom Zone Play Set Review
Mighty Max Stings the Scorpion is a Doom Zone from the second wave of Mighty Max Doom Zone play sets. Also known as Scorpio in some regions. This play set was the inspiration for the Mighty Max episode Scorpio Rising from the cartoon series.
There’s a clear radioactive-scorpion theme as the Mighty One ventures deep underground to investigate these monstrous scorpions.

Stings Scorpion Exterior
The outside of this set works. It’s a large Scorpion toy with articulation int he stinger and claws that clamp at the front. The black and red look extremely 90’s with some textured details on the claws and legs. The Mighty Max scorpion has four beady yellow eyes and, combined with the other details, makes the exterior of this play set a fun toy on its own.
The Mighty Max toy line revisited the insect theme a few more times. Notably for the Trapped by Arachnoid and Squishes the Fly Doom Zones.
Scorpio Rising TV Episode
In the episode, Scorpio Rising, Max discovers a bunker with a crazed scientist from the 50’s, conducting his own radioactive research. Growing massive scorpions that are tunneling beneath the town.
The story for the Mighty Max Stings Scorpion Play Set is a bit different. Opening up this set, you’ll see the big included figure is Scorpobot. The Villain is named Scorpion and the big claws create the main play feature. The Grabbatron. In the comic panel for this figure, Max defeats the Scorpobot by dodging the tail as it Stings itself. Mighty Max then traps Scorpion with the Grabbatron. I’ve been using the Mighty Max Wikia to get the story for these sets; great website with a lot of information for a range of playsets.
Mighty Max Stings Scorpion Interior
So, the inside of this set didn’t meet my expectations. When I reviewed the Mighty Max Rams Rhesus Playset the abundance of black plastic is pretty unattractive. It’s the same issue here. It looks great on the outside, making the Scorpion black with the high contrast red. But once we open up Mighty Max Stings Scorpion, the black doesn’t add to the environment. It feels out of place. I like the yellow, red and green highlights inside, but it is a small play set. There’s a big sticker covering the floor of this figure and once you take out the Scorpobot, the set feels gutted. The exterior scorpion looks amazing, but it doesn’t translate well to the space inside the Mighty Max play set.
The main play feature for Mighty Max Stings Scorpion is the Grabbatron. Formed out of the Scorpion’s Pincers. It’s a big play-feature for a Mighty Max set but it feels out of place. The extra details on the underside make them appear robotic but they push the play set out of balance. The pincers make it top heavy and detract from the toxic, radioactive caverns.
