Mighty Max Horror Head Review Marathon
10 Mighty Max Horror Heads over 1 month
To celebrate Halloween on the Leftovers YouTube channel, I wanted to review a lot of 10 Mighty Max Horror Heads I bought (for way too much money). The Horror Heads are a line of Mighty Max Playsets that were smaller than the Doom Zones and often featured 3 pieces (including Mighty Max) in a small head.
As a kid, the Horror Head playsets were much easier to convince parents to buy and were great for bulking out the Doom Zones we did have.
So to celebrate one of my favourite toy sets, we’ve got 10 Mighty Max Horror Head reviews, each one is complete and most have their backing cards and comics. Thanks for checking it out!
If you like the Mighty Max playsets, you can see the full collection here.

Mighty Max Pulverizes Sea Squirm
Mighty Max finds himself being teleported into a watery graveyard where he comes face to face with a sea serpent and the guardian, Krillor. With two enemy figures, some great sculpted details and even a few ridges within the playset itself, Sea Squirm is a really decent playset with a strong theme and a great combination of colours.
This could be a great playset to expand the aquatic Doom Zones; Caught by the Man Eater or Sinks Nautilus.
Mighty Max Defeats Vamp Biter (also known as Nightwing)
This is easily a favourite of mine. With a dungeon-cavern theme, Mighty Max goes up against Nightwing, the vampire bat monster. The playset only has the one enemy but Nightwing is a big figure and there’s a lot of details inside the playset itself.
I think the atmosphere they managed to create in this small space is awesome and despite being quite a dark playset, I really love the shade of purple they used as the main colour.
Mighty Max Against Robot Invader
A robot theme that feels kind of uninspired. There’s a lot of black plastic used throughout with highlights done with metallic paints. It’s an overall gaudy look but I really like the idea of Master Brain that protrudes through the head. You also get an Android robot and the Mighty Max figure.
It’s a pretty sparse Horror Head, not much to look at, not all that many sculpted details. You could use something like this to expand your Cyberskull Doom Zone or the follow up, Mighty Max Shuts down Cybot.
Mighty Max Challenges Lava Beast
The Lava beast is a recurring minion in the Mighty Max series, and the Horror Head brings our favourite molten monster to a miniature playset complete with a Lava Beetle (complete with articulation), our hero Mighty Max as well as Energoid, a kind of purple, lumpy creature who wants to take over the world.
I love the organic sculpting to this horror head. There’s a lot of interesting designs in here and obviously a great palette of warm colours to work with. Could be a great horror head to expand your Ultra Magus or even Lava Beast Battle Warrior.
Mighty Max Battles Skull Warrior
Skull Warrior is a bounty hunter and Mighty Max gets dropped right in the middle of his lair. It’s a tense situation but the Mighty One is up for the challenge. The Horror Head comes complete with a vehicle called the Space surfer, that forms the eye for the outside of the playset as well as Skull Warrior.
I really liked the cyborg look to the playset but I feel like Skull Warriors base was more junkyard than bounty hunters headquarters. Nothing particularly gruesome here but the Skull Warrior figure looked pretty cool.
Mighty Max Neutralizes Zomboid
A zombie themed horror head that came complete with some great little figures; Zomboid the brain-slug creature and Sluggon, the ravenous centipede that’ll eat anything in its way. The playset uses a lot of fleshy, tissue-like textures with some sculpted slugs and bones. On the outside, we have some great features like the protruding eye and overall, I love the colours used for this set.
This is one of the few Horror Heads that went on to inspire an episode for the TV series. Even though the Zomboid was relegated to an alien-parasite that controlled minds, it was cool to see the cartoon tackling some more zombie-themed episodes (though I guess the undead isn’t a great morning cartoon material?).
Both the figures are pretty large and fill the head well, it’s a good Horror Head that could work really well with something like the Mighty Max Grips the Hand Doom Zone.
Mighty Max Fights Nuke Ranger
Mighty Max Fights Nuke Ranger is a Toxic Waste themed Horror Head. On the outside, we have a Gas Mask with crazy eyes. Opening it up, the Horror Head comes complete with the Nuke Ranger himself, his Hover Pod vehicle and the Mighty One. I really liked the overall design here with the way the Toxic symbol on the forehead from the outside of the playset formed the vents above the nuclear reactor.
One thing a little different about this Horror Head specifically is the fact there isn’t a place for Mighty Max to stand on the base with the only available foot holes are located on the Hover Pod. Nuke Ranger’s Hover Pod is a big vehicle for a Horror Head and becomes a seat for the Nuke Ranger to cruise around with (beats a wheelchair). In the comic, we discover that Mighty Max defeats the Nuke Ranger using a skeleton. Firstly to hide behind and secondly, he throws the skeleton at the Nuke Ranger, scaring him and causing him to fall. Obviously, the Nuke Ranger might just be a confused old man.
Mighty Max Versus Kronosaur
This playset is all about the past surviving in a time capsule. A caveman and his pet dinosaur, Big Steggy, are causing a ruckus, eating people, and it’s up to Mighty Max to stop the prehistoric predators. It’s a really well sculpted set with plenty of details sculpted within the set. A few steampunk style contraptions, a prehistoric habitat, bugs, bones and some great ridges along the floor.
Both figures are pretty large and it’s another set full of organic sculpting and detail (with a few mechanical additions). Lots to look at here and could easily be used to expand your Battle Cat and Dino Lab Doom Zones.
Mighty Max Hammers Ax Man
The Ax Man (Spike to his friends) is obviously the guy holding a chainsaw. Short, squat and with a face skewered with sticks. Mighty Max gets teleported straight into a bright, snot-green torture chamber adorned with another captive along the back wall.
Obviously we get an awesome play-feature with a large swinging blade through the middle of the playset (one of the few Horror Heads with an external play feature).
We even got a TV episode with Spike (stick face) and his history with Norman. Even though the cartoon couldn’t be quite as gruesome as the original Horror Head, I feel like the episode in particular really used the opportunity to flesh out the characters a bit better.
Mighty Max Survives Corpus
Mighty Max Survives Corpus is one of the many zombie-themed Horror Heads with a graveyard theme. But wow, this playset nearly feels like it’s showing off. The head of Corpus has some really great, gross sculpted details. One standout feature is a unique way to open the playset.
Opening on half of the head creates a small cavern area. This is where Mighty Max and Mort the Gravedigger confront each other over the grave of Corpus. The second half of the head reveals an extended wall section creating a brick-walled dungeon feel. It’s a playset that allows characters to stand in plenty of different locations, a unique way to open the Horror Head as well as three figures.
Mighty Max Survives Corpus could be a great way to flesh out a Doom Zone like Grips the Hand. But I feel like this is one example of a Horror Head that can really stand on its own and creates an amazing miniature playset.
