DecapAttack – Sega Mega Drive (Genesis)

DecapAttack – Sega Mega Drive (Genesis)

You’re a mummy on a mission to save the world

Developed by Vic Tokai and released into the world in 1991, DecapAttack follows Chuck D. Head, a mummy pieced together by Dr. Frankenstein on a mission to save the world. You jump from island to island, defeating the bosses and bringing them back together.

Originally released as Magical Hat’s Turbo Flight! Adventure in Japan, the game was reworked for Western audiences with a broader horror theme. DecapAttack follows a set of gameplay mechanics Vic Tokai had been developing since the late 80s in games like Kid Kool and Psycho Fox.

Spiritual successors

In 1988 and 1989 Vic Tokai released two games considered to be the spiritual predecessors to Magical Hat and DecapAttack; Kid Kool for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1988 and a year later, Psycho Fox for the Master System.

Both games have some shared conventions, such as three stages and then a boss fight as well as a boomerang-style power-up.

Magical Hat

DecapAttack is a reskinned, reworked version of a Vic Tokai game based off a Japanese anime called Magical Hat. The TV series ran for a year from 1989 – 1990 over 33 episodes on Fuji Television. Magical Hat’s Turbo Flight! Adventure (まじかるハットのぶっとびターボ!大冒険Majikaru Hatto no Buttobi Tābo! Daibōken) for the Sega Mega Drive is based on this series and only released in Japan.

The Magical Hat game took a lot of the same elements from Kid Kool and Psycho Fox and brought them into a 16-bit game. It’s bright and colourful and the art style is true to the cartoon and fun.
