The Haunted Guitar

On a walk home from school, Jeffery and his friend, Beth, walk past a burnt down music store. The fire has destroyed nearly everything inside except a guitar. Jeffery takes the guitar with the plan to eventually take lessons to learn how to play but quickly discovers there’s a quicker way to learn how to play.

 

Tune in tomorrow

Elizabeth has just moved and she is bored in the small town. Even though her best friend Lauren lives nearby, a thunderstorm means she’s stuck inside so she decides to watch some TV. The soap opera she starts watching, Looking towards tomorrow, seems great until things start feeling a little too real. As Elizabeth watches starts watching it day after day, she starts to realise what’s happening in the show is also happening to her.

 

Live Bait

Timmy is on holiday and he hates it. His family like camping at a lake where they do a lot of fishing but Timmy hates fish. Another boy, Duke, is also on vacation at the lake and dares Timmy to go fishing with him. They struggle finding a boat to rent, until they reach a very worn down, rickety peer with a bait shop on it. The old man inside is fascinated about bait, and finding the right bait for the right fish. Timmy and Duke make a deal to let the man keep any fish they catch. A decision they’ll come to regret when they realise what’s in the water.

 

Something strange about Marci

Marci is new in town. She’s a strange girl that keeps her distance and seems quite rude. She doesn’t join in any of the games and doesn’t wave or smile. What’s even weirder is that she lives on her own in a tent.

Something Strange about Marci is the shortest story in this collection.

 

The Ghost Sitter

Ray and Mike have just moved. Their new house is awesome and old and a little creepy but it’s their neighbours they’re worried about. At school they start hearing rumours about a haunted house on their street. Their classmates indicate that Ray and Mike’s neighbours house is haunted. That weekend Ray and Mike get to explore it for themselves when they are tasked with doing some chores there to help their neighbours. It doesn’t take long for them to notice the weird smells, destroyed toys and start hearing strange noises.

 

Fun with Spelling

Kari finds a spell book left behind by her weird Aunt. She’s doubtful but decides to try a few of the spells on the meanest girl in her class. Kari tries a forgetfulness spell first and it actually works! What else can this weird old spell book do?

Fun with spelling is one of the stories with a confirmed ghostwriter, Carolyn Crimi, who worked with R. L. Stine before when she ghostwrote two books in the Ghosts of Fear Street series.

 

Matt’s Lunch Box

When Matt loses his lunch box, he isn’t impressed with the replacement his mum finds. It’s got a lame cartoon on the front depicting three demons chasing a boy. Soon he realises it’s not an ordinary lunchbox. First he hears voices and then, once the lunchbox is opened, three voracious demons appear demanding food. Suddenly Matt finds himself having to feed the demons instead of himself.

 

Stuck in 1957

Shanna and her family recently moved into a house built in 1957. She starts school the next day and is adamant her hair needs to be perfect. Her plans to follow through with a rigorous haircare routine are interrupted when her family plan to go out for dinner but while exploring her room, she discovers a pair of funky cat eye sunglasses. Popping them on, she feels an intense tingling sensation and is taken back in time to 1957. Now she can avoid a boring dinner and explore the 1950s! But things go wrong quickly when her mother starts helping her prepare for school.

 

Mirror, Mirror on the Wall

Bonnie is beautiful. She knows it and so does everyone else. Her favourite pastime is looking at her own reflection, but she starts to notice her reflection is starting to do some weird things. She quickly learns her reflection isn’t happy just copying Bonnie anymore.

 

What’s Cooking

Can you think of anything worse than spending summer at school catching up on maths? Robert and his cousin, Diana, need to attend a recently reopened school, Mill Road School. The school was closed sometime after a cook named Susan Chopman worked there. She was infamous for her terrible cooking often shocking children with dishes like Chop Suey and Meat Surprise. It earned her the nickname Chop Suey which eventually drove her crazy, causing her to attack several students with a cleaver until she was arrested. Legend says she died in a factory accident after her release from prison, but you can summon her ghost by repeating her name, Chop Suey, three times.
