Atari Lynx Review with Batman Returns
Technically better than the Game Boy… But how does it really compare?
The Lynx was released back in ’89 in the States, the same year as the original Gameboy but technically, the Lynx had a lot more going for it; like it’s colour screen and sprite scaling/distorting. Even though Nintendo wasn’t the outright winner in the console wars here in Australia, the popularity of Nintendo in both Japan and the USA meant that the Gameboy had a much stronger library of games and money for marketing and development.
To help viewers who may not be as familiar with the Lynx system, we’ve included a mini Batman Returns review, Bruiser and I were actually arguing whether it was a pack in with the Lynx or not, he got it his way, but either way, Batman Returns is probably one of the more popular and common titles for the system and it looks great.
Batman Returns however is forbiddingly difficult. So if you’re keen on the Lynx and enjoy your Batman, definitely look for the cheat codes; here at the LOCR, we wouldn’t think any less of you. The game itself is beautifully crafted, The first and last bosses are creative and imaginative, the enemies are varied and the small details like hiding behind the post box when the building explodes really make this an engaging game. In comparison to the gameboy games that were out at the time, the Lynx certainly had a lot more horsepower to throw around, but luckluster third party support and a plethora of mediocre, confusing and ugly games plagued the Lynx. If you do your research, you’ll be able to find plenty of great games and begin to really appreciate the Atari Lynx’s capabilities.
