LOCR Producer: So we’ve decided to kick off season two with Ninja Gaiden for the Atari Lynx. We realise that we ended season one with Bill and Ted for the Lynx but Ninja Gaiden really shows off the capabilities far better and this felt like a great way to round out our impressions of the Atari Lynx, cover a diverse range of titles for it and really start this season with a solid beat-’em-up game.
Here we are, with the arcade conversion of Ninja Gaiden for the Lynx, and this is a far different game to what Nintendo and Sega Mastersystem owners experienced. In a lot of ways, the arcade Ninja Gaiden was a more lighthearted game; a lot of the dark undertones and classic cinematic scenes have been omitted for bright colours, comical locations and bosses that look like they were lifted straight out of a fighting game like street fighter.
As a game, Ninja Gaiden doesn’t break any new ground, it’s real strength is in it’s solid arcade action; it’s got classic, simple gameplay, a few different moves, powerups and as far as handheld consoles go, it translates well onto the Lynx. It’s not the smoothest game, but it’s incredibly playable.
